Plasma spray
What is plasma spraying?
Plasma spraying creates a high-quality coating by using a combination of a high-temperature, high-energy heat source and a relatively inert spraying medium, typically argon, which allows for high particle flow velocities
Plasma is the term used to describe a gas that has been heated to such a high temperature that it has become ionized and provides electrical conductivity.
The use of this technology enables the spraying of particles of virtually any metal or ceramic onto many different materials with exceptional bonding strength and minimal substrate distortion.
Advantages of plasma spraying
A great advantage of plasma spraying is the ability to spray a wide range of materials, from metals to refractory ceramics, onto both small and large components while ensuring
corrosion protection
wear resistance
heat and oxidation resistance
appropriate electrical resistivity and conductivity
Applications and materials
Due to its versatility and excellent characteristics,
plasma treatment is chosen by many coating technologists
as the process offering the widest palette of coating materials.
- Fretting wear: spraying tungsten carbide/cobalt onto seal ring grooves — gas turbines;
- High-temperature protection: thermal barrier coatings (TBC) — on gas turbine combustion hardware;
- Wear resistance: spraying chromium oxide ceramic material onto printing rolls for laser engraving;
- Galling resistance: spraying molybdenum alloys onto piston rings for industrial diesel engines;
- Erosion/abrasion resistance: downhole drilling tools — oil and gas products.
- Carbides, metals, ceramics, abradables.
Process data
Plasma spraying is characterized by the fact that the sprayed material is melted in an electric arc plasma. By utilizing inert gases during the spraying process, we ensure the protection of the deposited material particles against oxidation. Plasma coating offers solutions for a wide range of applications in both low- and high-temperature environments.
